I Survived 2020, I Can Survive Anything

2020 has been a hell of a year, and that’s putting it lightly! Pandemics, recession, natural disasters, great triumphs and failures in leadership. If you’re reading this right now, I’m proud of you for surviving 2020. And you can commemorate getting through one of the hardest years in recent memory with this design
About This Artwork
I wanted to make a piece that was more timely than the ‘evergreen’ content I normally make. Something to do with 2020. Maybe it could be a New Years’ product. And I wanted it to be hopeful and motivational, so it would play nice with my Law of Attraction slogan designs.
I chose a gritty font, DCC Sharp Disressed Black, and made this in Vectornator in a very short space of time.
In March of 2021 I revisited this artwork and found that it just didn’t seem good enough. I audited it and narrowed down a list of what I wanted to change about it.
- The text had little size variance. The size should change based on where I want people’s focus. In this case, I wanted the biggest focus on the word ‘2020’.
- The design should fit better into a rectangle, without gaps on the sides
- I could incorporate some kind of simple shapes to give interest to the design
For the accent shapes, I chose some stars. They were not textured, so I made duplicates of the largest letters in the artwork and used their distress, inverted, as a mask on the stars. I think it worked out pretty seamlessly. And the stars give a proud Americana flavor to the artwork.
